Driving Under Influence of Drugs

Driving under the influence of drugs is just as harmful on the road as driving while intoxicated by alcohol. What this concept means is operating a motor vehicle at the time when you have drugs in your system. Driving under the influence of drugs is never legal under any circumstances at all. If you have illegal drugs or certain prescription drugs in your system and you are driving, then you are breaking the law.

There is no situation where it is okay for you to take drugs of any kind and then get behind the wheel of a car. The problem with driving under influence of drugs is that there is no telling how badly your ability to drive is impaired until the point where something bad happens because you thought you had all of your faculties but didn't. There are too many stories out there of people that got behind the wheel after they had taken drugs, and they mistakenly thought that they were clear headed enough to drive home after a party or to make a quick trip to the store. Unfortunately, it wasn't until they were well on their way that they realized they were unable to drive clearly.

There are entirely too many car crashes that come as a result of driving under influence of drugs. When you go driving under influence of drugs, you unfortunately put not only your own self at risk, but also all of the people around you. Before you ever get behind the wheel, you need to consider the odds that you will be clear headed enough to get yourself from point A to point B without hurting yourself or someone else.

If you are caught driving under influence of drugs, regardless of whether it is your first, second or third offense, you are going to end up paying harsh penalties for your poor judgment. There is never a situation where driving under influence of drugs is okay, legally or otherwise. Driving while impaired by drugs or under the influence of drugs is just as deadly as driving under the influence of alcohol. Whether an illegal drug or a powerful prescription drug, if you are found to be driving under influence of drugs, you can be convicted of a DUI or DWI offense just like if you were driving under the influence of alcohol or driving while drunk.

In many states in the United States there is a very broad definition of what constitutes a drug. The definition of drugs often includes any substance capable of affecting the mental or physical capacities of a person to the extent where their ability to drive is negatively affected. It is possible for you to be convicted of driving under influence of drugs even when you are only taking an over the counter drug. What it depends on is whether or not the drug is impairing your ability to drive.
